How can we ensure that people’s voices genuinely shape the health policies and decisions that affect their lives? And what will it take to systematise social participation into health system processes across Europe?
This interactive webinar will explore the future of social participation in health in Europe at a pivotal moment for the field. In June 2026, Austria’s national public health institute, Gesundheit Österreich (GÖG), was designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Social Participation in Health and Care. The Centre was officially unveiled at the European Health Forum Gastein 2026, marking an important milestone in advancing this agenda.
Social participation in health is about empowering people to have a meaningful say in decisions that affect their health and well-being. It has gained significant momentum on the global health policy agenda, particularly following the World Health Assembly’s endorsement of a resolution in May 2024 calling for regular, meaningful and sustained social participation in health-related decision-making. By bringing people’s lived experiences, expectations and needs into policymaking, social participation can help create health systems that are more responsive, equitable and inclusive.
But how can this ambition be translated into practice across diverse national contexts? What does a genuine culture of participation look like, and how can it be strengthened?
Through inspiring country case studies, contributions from colleagues of the TWIG Social Participation within EuroHealthNet, and insights into the future plans of the new WHO Collaborating Centre, this webinar will explore these questions together. Join colleagues from across Europe to exchange experiences, share ideas and help shape the next chapter of social participation in health!
