Balancing innovation, growth & solidarity in a changing global landscape

In a world marked by rising geopolitical trade tensions, de-globalisation and conflict, Europe faces some stark challenges while protecting its values, social model, and economic resilience. While European countries scramble to prioritise defence and security, another critical, less visible but equally vital challenge exists for the biopharma and broader life sciences eco-system.

Europe’s share of global investment in biomedical innovation has steadily declined over recent decades. While European basic science remains strong, its translation into innovation often occurs elsewhere, depriving European patients of timely access to cutting-edge treatments and weakening the region’s economic competitiveness. This trend threatens not only Europe’s health sovereignty but also its ability to lead in global health innovation and offer access to medicines for all.

The discussion will explore how Europe can reconcile three critical priorities:

  • Ensuring strong incentives for innovation to secure the region’s competitiveness and health security
  • Managing growing pressures on healthcare budgets and social protection systems
  • Guaranteeing equitable access to healthcare technologies for all European citizens
